I just finished eating soup and crackers at Metropolitan Market on Queen Anne.
Every time I eat soup, I crush saltine crackers into pieces while they are still in the wrapper, then open them and dump them into my soup.
But that’s not always the way I did it.
When I was little (elementary school), I opened the package of crackers first, crushed the crackers in my hands, and then dumped them into the bowl. The problem with that method was, just about every time, at least 25% of the cracker pieces/crumbs would end up on the table (or floor). Why? Because I couldn’t seal the crumbs in my hands while crushing them or dumping them into my bowl.
My grandfather showed me a better way.
At least 3 times a week, he drove up to the mini mart / general store about 5 miles from his house for lunch to get soup. From repetition, he learned the best way to get crackers into a bowl. And passed that trick on to me.
Tricks take a long time to learn. Chances are good that every single thing you do in life…has a trick to it that will save you time. You likely won’t figure that trick out for quite some time, unless it’s involved in your daily craft in which you will get frustrated and figure out the easiest way to tackle the problem via repetition. Otherwise, you will keep on going about it the same way you always have unless someone shows you a better way.
My grandfather passed when I was in 8th grade. But the “passing on tricks of the trade” lesson is one of the first things that comes to mind when I think of him.
Are you passing on your tricks?
