Facebook is testing virtual gifts. The gifts are “tokens of appreciation” costing $1 that can decorate a friend’s profile. Will people buy them? I’m going to say NO. I wonder if Facebook figured this out already and shut the gift shop down? I just tried to visit the gift shop and got the message “The Gift Shop is closed. Please call again soon. We all gotta eat, right?” See screen shot below:
Sure, it’s great that Facebook is donating the proceeds from the 1st month to Koman for a Cure, but will users buy these icons when the money goes into Facebook’s pockets? I doubt it. I’m all for this initiative IF Facebook donates ALL the proceeds (forever) to charity. Then users would have a reason to valid spend $1 on a worthless icon for their friends profile. Facebook execs — I sure hope this is not an attempt at a new business model.
