Are there any significant differences between “real” and “virtual” communities, and if so, what is the nature of those differences? What does the term “community” actually mean within such a rapidly transforming context of mediated communication technology? Is the internet really a “social” network as such, or a barrier to meaningful communication and social interaction?

If so, check out this interesting post on Blogotopics! Do you think Facebook and Myspace are virtual communities or real communities? I would argue mainly real (facebook more so than myspace) since I know most of my “friends.”
